Are you a human being or a human doing?

“Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a human being.” He had a personal relationship with God. After Adam sinned that relationship that allowed Adam to be intimate with God was severed. Now without God, he was no longer a human being, he had to be a human doing to meet his needs.

“To Adam the Lord God said, ‘Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat of it,’ Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the fields. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground….And the Lord God said, ‘The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat and live forever. So the Lord banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. After he drove the man out, He placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.” (Genesis 3:17-24)

We are not sinners (separate from God) by choice, but by birth. Because of the sin of all mankind that we inherited through Adam’s disobedience, as soon as our intimate time with God in the womb of our mother is finished and the umbilical cord is cut, we are no longer humans being – we become humans doing.

Not to worry or fret though, because we could not restore that relationship we had from the beginning and are not capable to even approach Him because of His holiness, He left heaven and became one of us, so after leading a sinless life, even though He was tempted just like us, but was without sin, He became our sin and paid the price so we could be forgiven and become a “human being with the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit”.

Which brings us back to the: “flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.”

In love and service to Jesus Christ of Nazareth, our Savior, Lord, King and Friend.
